Books For Africa
In conjunction with the GCC, a program has been established to gather and distribute books to schools across Africa. There are 53 African countries and each one is in desperate need of supplies, especially books.
Schools across the U.S. will be invited to participate in the GlobalCitizen Book Drive. Students, teachers and administrators at each school will be asked to gather new and used books for the period of one month. As international shipping can become expensive, we also ask that each student donate $1.00 to help offset the shipping costs. All materials collected will be distributed through the Books For Africa (BFA) organization. Since being established in 1988, BFA has shipped over 20 million books to 45 African countries. However, millions more are still needed. The 2009 GlobalCitizen Book Drive will benefit primary and secondary schools in Gabon, located in central Africa along the Gulf of Guinea.
At the end of the month, the books will be collected and delivered to the BFA distribution center. The goal of this program is to teach American youth that being a global citizen doesn't require flying halfway around the world, it simply involves thinking outside their borders.
