GlobalCitizen Book Drive––––––––––––––––––––––––

In conjunction with the GCC, a program has been established to gather and distribute books to schools across Africa. There are 53 African countries and each one is in desperate need of supplies, especially books.

GCC Book Drive
Schools across the U.S. will be invited to participate in the GlobalCitizen Book Drive. Students, teachers and administrators at each school will be asked to gather new and used books for the period of one month. As international shipping can become expensive, we also ask that each student donate $1.00 to help offset the shipping costs. All materials collected will be distributed through the Books For Africa (BFA) organization. Since being established in 1988, BFA has shipped over 20 million books to 45 African countries. However, millions more are still needed. The 2009 GlobalCitizen Book Drive will benefit primary and secondary schools in Gabon, located in central Africa along the Gulf of Guinea.

At the end of the month, the books will be collected and delivered to the BFA distribution center. The goal of this program is to teach American youth that being a global citizen doesn't require flying halfway around the world, it simply involves thinking outside their borders.

Types of materials needed:

New and used. Textbooks, less than 10 years old (ranging from elementary education to high school). General leisure books are also needed, including children's storybooks, young adult fiction and non-fiction. All books should be appropriate for children in grades K-12.

Where materials will be distributed:

The donations will be sent to the BFA distribution center. Once they arrive in Africa, the materials will be distributed to primary and secondary schools by the University of Gabon. The university will also receive donations from the BFA warehouse. Subsequent book drives will benefit additional schools in need throughout the 53 African nations.

Tax deductible donation:

All donations are tax deductible through BFA, a 501(c)(3) organization. A letter will be issued to each donor for tax deduction purposes.
