Who We Help–––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
By raising global awareness and gaining global support, the GCC will raise funds to support programs in the following five areas:
|
Education
According to the United States Agency for International Development, 40-percent of school-age children in Africa do not attend school. Forty-six million children in Africa have never set foot in a classroom and those who have, probably had to share a textbook with 10 other students. By partnering with Books For Africa, the GCC will provide a container of 22,000 books and other educational materials to schools in the African nation of Gabon through the GlobalCitizen Book Drive.
|
Health
In March 2009, UNICEF reported a severe cholera outbreak in nine southern African nations. At highest-risk of contracting the deadly disease are women and children. To help prevent the spread of cholera, the GCC will work to provide the tools necessary to eradicate the disease. Cholera kits equipped with medications, personal hygiene products and water treatment systems will be distributed in areas hit hardest by the recent outbreak.
Human Rights
Over the past year, more than 100,000 people in South Africa were displaced because of xenophobic violence; more than 1,000 were killed. To help those affected by xenophobic behavior begin rebuilding their lives, the GCC will work to provide maternal and child health; environmental health (water and sanitation); and access to food and shelter.
Livelihoods
Over 300 million children worldwide have never owned a pair of shoes. Giving a person just one pair of shoes can make a world of difference. We will facilitate the donation of 50,000 pairs of shoes to underprivileged women and children in the U.S. and Africa.
U.S. Troop Rehabilitation
Since 2003, more than 30,000 U.S. soldiers have been wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan. Many have lost arms or legs, making the transition back into society a difficult one. The GCC pledges to support the troops by providing assistance to those who have been wounded once they arrive home from combat. We will donate a portion of the funds generated by the "I Am A GlobalCitizen" benefit concert to programs that help these brave men and women rebuild their lives.
