Xenophobia is the intense fear or dislike of people from another country. While it might be easy to dismiss xenophobia as racism, the two are simply not the same. A racist is prejudice against a certain race and a xenophobic person dislikes the idea of anyone that is foreign to their culture and/or nationality. As human beings, when we are uneducated about or don't understand something, our natural response is to fear it. In places where there are large groups of uneducated people this fear can spread like a disease, infecting everyone. Fortunately, like most diseases, hatred can be eradicated with the right tools.
Although the GCC's 2009 efforts are concentrated on eradicating xenophobic behavior in South Africa, it is not the only country experiencing such discrimination. Recent incidents of xenophobic violence have been documented in Cyprus, the Dominican Republic and Ukraine. As the GCC grows, Nyasha hopes to implement programs to eliminate xenophobia across the globe.
